Mary Lou Mcdonald Biography, In 1998, McDonald began her political career by joining Fianna Fáil, but she left the party after a year owing to fundamental policy disagreements, especially on issues pertaining to Northern Ireland and social justice. When questioned about her time spent in Fianna Fáil in 2014, McDonald said, “I was in the wrong party.” After meeting members of Sinn Féin via the Irish National Congress, McDonald realized that Sinn Féin better represented her Republican values.

After being re-elected as Sinn Féin leader at a party conference on November 18, 2017, Gerry Adams made the announcement that he would not be running for re-election as a TD for the Louth constituency in the next election and would instead ask the party leadership to call for a special Ard Fheis to be held within three months to choose a new president.

With no other candidates stepping forward, McDonald was declared the next President of Sinn Féin on January 20th, 2018, after the closing of nominations to replace Adams. At a special Ard Fheis held in Dublin on February 10, 2018, she was officially elected president.

Some people, including Fine Gael member Simon Coveney, blasted McDonald in March 2019 for carrying a banner that said “England Get Out of Ireland” during the New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade. McDonald quickly apologized for her conduct following the event, saying that she had intended the message to be addressed at the British state and not the English people. Following the incident, support for Sinn Féin in opinion surveys decreased from 18% to 13%.

Elections for the European Parliament and for municipal offices in Ireland were conducted on the same day, May 24, 2019. Sinn Féin lost two Members of the European Parliament and had its vote share fall by 7.8 percentage points in the European elections, while it lost seventy-eight local councilors, or over half of its total, and saw its vote share fall by 5.7 percentage points in the local elections. For Sinn Féin, the outcome was terrible. according to McDonald “Our day trip turned out to be a disaster. But that’s the nature of politics sometimes, and it’s a test of your mettle when it does. Obviously, as the leader, it’s a challenge for me as an individual “.

However, the party recovered and won 24.5% of the first-choice votes in the 2020 general election, besting Fine Gael by 3.6% and Fianna Fáil by 2.3%. It was Sinn Féin’s strongest showing in a general election in modern times. McDonald received 35.7% of the first-choice votes in the Dublin Central seat, making him the victor.

After the party’s election win, McDonald said that Ireland “is no longer a two-party system” and stated her ambition to establish a coalition administration. Sinn Féin TD Matt Carthy attributed the dramatic turnaround between the May 2019 elections and the general election outcome in 2020 to McDonald’s leadership and her ability to convey Sinn Féin’s policy to the public. Some have speculated that McDonald’s popularity as party leader may have helped Sinn Féin win.

After Sinn Féin, Fine Gael, and the Green Party established a coalition government on 26 June 2020, McDonald of Sinn Féin became the leader of the opposition. She called the coalition deal a “marriage of convenience” and said that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael had worked together to keep Sinn Féin out of power.
