Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, born July 2, 1991, better known as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and performing artiste. He hails from Rivers State, South South Nigeria. He came into prominence in 2012 after releasing his hit single “Like to Party,” from his debut album L.I.F.E.

Early Life and Education

Burna Boy was born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the South South region of Nigeria. His mother Bose Ogulu was a translator, while his father, Samuel Ogulu a welder.

Benson Idonije, his grandfather, formerly managed Fela Kuti.

Burna Boy’s mother is the one managing the Afrobeat singer and she is proud to be his son’s manager.

He first used FruityLoops to create his own beats. After graduating from Corona Secondary School in Agbara (Ogun State), he moved to London to pursue his education.

He studied media technology from 2008 to 2009 at the University of Sussex, followed by media communications and culture from 2009 to 2010 at Oxford Brookes University.

After that, he went back to Port Harcourt and accepted a one-year internship at Rhythm 93.7 FM. After arriving back in Lagos, he began his music career.

Career

After releasing “Like to Party,” the main song from his debut studio album L.I.F.E., Burna Boy became famous in 2012.

In 2017 Burna Boy sign with Warner Music Group internationally and Bad Habit/Atlantic Records in the US. His first release on a big label was his third studio album, Outside.

He was named an Apple Music Up Next artist in 2019 and won Best International Act at the BET Awards that year.

His fourth studio album, titled African Giant, was released in July 2019. It was nominated for a Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards and won Album of the Year at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards.

At the 2020 VGMAs, he received the African Artist of the Year award.

He became the first Nigerian to receive back-to-back nominations at the Grammys in 2020 when his album Twice as Tall received a nomination in the same category at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

Twice as Tall took up the 63rd Annual Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 2021.
